Calis Beach – Fethiye

Calis Beach

Çalış Beach (pronounced Cha-lish) is the laid-back, sunset-loving sibling to the more famous Ölüdeniz. While it lacks the dramatic turquoise lagoon of its neighbor, it makes up for it with a 4km stretch of coastline, a breezy atmosphere, and some of the best views in the Fethiye region.
Here is what you need to know if you’re planning a visit or staying there:

The Famous Sunsets
Çalış is arguably the best place in Fethiye to watch the sun go down. Because the beach faces west across the Gulf of Fethiye, the horizon is completely unobstructed. The sky often turns vivid shades of orange, pink, and purple, making the beach promenade the place to be around 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM.

Beach Conditions
The Shore: The beach is a mix of shingle, pebbles, and dark sand. It isn’t the “powdery white sand” type, so bringing water shoes is a smart move.
The Water: It is generally clean but can get a bit wavy in the afternoons due to the “Çalış breeze.” This wind is a lifesaver in the peak of summer (July/August) as it keeps the temperature bearable.
Water Sports: This breeze also makes it a hotspot for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

The Promenade
A long, pedestrianized walkway runs right alongside the beach. It is packed with:
Dining: Everything from traditional Turkish pide and kebabs to international fare (plenty of English breakfasts and Italian spots).
Water Taxis: One of the best ways to get to Fethiye center is the Water Taxi. It runs every 30 minutes from the canal bridge and is a scenic, affordable 20-minute boat ride.
Sunday Market: There is a large local market every Sunday near the back of Çalış where you can find fresh produce and “genuine fake” designer gear.

Nature & Wildlife
Çalış is a protected nesting ground for Caretta Caretta (Loggerhead sea turtles).
If you visit between May and September, you’ll see metal cages on the sand; these protect the buried eggs.
At the southern end of the beach, there is a small bird sanctuary (Koca Çalış) where you can often spot kingfishers and flamingos depending on the season.

Quick Tips
Accessibility: It is much flatter than the rest of Fethiye, making it ideal for cycling or those with mobility issues.
Stay here if: You want a more affordable, “local” feel than Oludeniz, or if you prefer being able to walk to dinner without climbing steep hills.
Avoid if: You are strictly looking for crystal-clear, still lagoon water (head to Blue Lagoon for that).
Are you looking for hotel recommendations in the area, or perhaps the best spots for a traditional Turkish breakfast?
