Fethiye Town
Fethiye is a stunning harbor town on Turkey's Turquoise Coast, built on the site of the ancient city of Telmessos. It’s one of those rare places that manages to be a bustling local hub, a historical goldmine, and a gateway to some of the world's most famous beaches all at once.
Key Areas to Explore
Paspatur (Old Town)
The “soul” of Fethiye. It’s a maze of narrow, shaded streets filled with colorful shops, carpet boutiques, and bars. Don’t miss the Umbrella Street for the photos.
The Harbor & Promenade
A long, beautiful walkway lined with palms. It’s perfect for a morning stroll or a dinner at one of the many seafood restaurants.
Tuesday Market (Salı Pazarı)
A massive local experience. You’ll find everything from fresh olives and spices to “genuine fake” designer bags.
History & Landmarks
You don’t have to go far to see Fethiye’s history; it’s literally carved into the cliffs above the town.
Amyntas Rock Tombs
These iconic Lycian tombs (dating back to 350 BC) overlook the city. The climb is worth it for the view of the bay at sunset.
Telmessos Ancient Theater
Located right in the heart of the town, this Roman-era theater is a quick, easy visit near the harbor.
Kayaköy (The Ghost Village)
A short drive away, this abandoned Greek village is a hauntingly beautiful collection of hundreds of stone houses and churches left after the 1923 population exchange.
While the town itself has a small beach area, the real gems are just a “dolmuş” (local minibus) ride away:
Oludeniz & Blue Lagoon:
Probably the most photographed beach in Turkey. It’s also the world capital for tandem paragliding from Babadağ Mountain.
Çalış Beach
Located on the north side of town, it’s famous for its long boardwalk and being a nesting ground for Caretta Caretta (loggerhead) sea turtles.
12 Island Boat Tours
These depart daily from the Fethiye harbor and are the best way to see the secluded coves and crystal-clear waters only accessible by sea.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (Apr–Jun) 20°C – 26°C Perfect. Green landscapes, pleasant hiking, and manageable crowds.
Summer (July–Aug) 30°C – 35°C+ Hot. Great for swimming, but very humid and busy.
Autumn (Sept–Oct) 22°C – 28°C Ideal. The sea is at its warmest, and the “burn” of summer has faded.
Pro Tip: If you’re into hiking, Fethiye is the starting point of the Lycian Way, a 500km trek along the coast. Even if you aren’t a hardcore hiker, walking the first few kilometers toward Kayaköy offers incredible views.
